Shannon Siepert, RN – H8 – Neurology/Neurosurgery
Please join the Center for Nursing Excellence in congratulating Shannon Siepert, RN for being selected as the DAISY Award recipient for the month of June!
Shannon works on H8 – Neurology/Neurosurgery and was nominated by a co-worker. The nomination below reflects how Shannon impacted their life in a very special way.
“Shannon Siepert is an excellent nurse for our neuro patients on H8. She has years of experience caring for this patient population as well as a certain way of interacting with “difficult” patients. We recently had a patient admitted for alteration in mental status and hallucinations. She was very ambulatory and very non-compliant. She did not want to be here and refused everything we needed to do initially, but it was determined that it was not safe to discharge her home yet. At one point the patient was “going home one way or another” and got dressed and headed to the elevator. Shannon was able to talk her down and convince her to return to her room so the provider could remove her central line.
The patient required a sitter for elopement risk and eventually was able to move closer to the nurses’ desk. Some nurses requested not to be assigned to this patient again due to the mental toll they experienced while caring for her. She was not easily persuaded about anything and rarely changed her paranoid mind. During her stay, Shannon was frequently found sitting next to the patient and having a conversation with her or giving her scheduled medications even when she was not her assigned nurse. She often calmed her down when she got agitated or had paranoid thoughts during her care.
Shannon cared for this patient almost every time she worked. The patient was here for a few weeks, but rarely received visitors. Shannon assisted on contacting her husband and family multiple times and even took her dirty clothes home to wash before discharge.”
Great job, Shannon Siepert!
