Medical/Neuro Intensive Care Unit (E4)
E4 is a 28 bed ICU and cares for a variety of patients with state-of-the-art technology and a highly trained all RN staff. Care for the medical patient population includes those in need of continuous renal replacement therapy for those experiencing cirrhosis, end stage liver/renal disease, pulmonary hypertension, respiratory failure, and sepsis, complications of heart disease, mechanical ventilation, vasopressor support and and a variety of others that require additional monitoring in the ICU.
As a part of the comprehensive stroke team, E4 also provides close monitoring for the neurological patient population including those experiencing hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic or with specialized equipment such as a craniotomy, external lumbar/ventricular drain, or those experiencing brain tumors, seizures, and others.
Comprehensive orientation and educational courses inclusive of advanced cardiac life support, basic critical care course, continuous renal replacement therapy classes, and dysrhythmia, are provided that allow individual advancement. National certification such as Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse (CNRN), or Stroke Certified Registered Nurse (SCRN) and are highly encouraged with educational review courses available.
Trauma Surgical Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (H4)
H4 has a 24 bed capacity and cares for a variety of patients. Care for the trauma patient includes trauma related accidents, blunt or penetrating trauma, bone and joint injuries, spinal trauma, or traumatic brain injuries to name a few. Care for surgical patient includes abdominal surgeries, solid organ transplants (liver and kidney), and a variety of other surgical interventions that may require additional monitoring in an ICU. Care for the cardiovascular patient includes carotid endarterectomy, coronary artery bypass grafting, heart valve repair or replacement, thoracotomy, or a variety of vascular related interventions.
H4 also cares for patients who have experienced a myocardial infarction and require aortic aneurysm pathway, cardiac catheterization, or congestive heart failure. Specialized equipment that may be used to care for patients include continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), external ventricular drain monitoring, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), Impella device, induced hypothermia, intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), and pulmonary artery catheter monitoring.
Education of our staff and advancement of individual skill level are vital to H4. Educational opportunities include; advanced cardiac life support certification, basic critical care course, continuous renal replacement therapy classes, designated cardiac surgery classes, dysrhythmia course, impella classes, intra-aortic balloon pump therapy, extensive training sessions/simulations learning how to manage patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support and trauma nursing core certification.
Trauma Progressive Care Unit (F4)
F4 is a 30-bed unit that serves patients admitted primarily through the Trauma and Emergent General Surgery (EGS) Services. Up to 6 beds are dedicated for ICU level patients from any service requiring frequent monitoring and nursing intervention; and, up to 15 beds are dedicated to an intermediate level of care (Progressive Care) for patients of any service requiring cardiac monitoring, frequent assessment and intervention, IV medication drips and long term mechanical ventilation. Diagnoses include accidents, chest trauma, geriatric falls, gunshot wounds, motor vehicle, orthopedic trauma, spinal cord injuries, and traumatic brain injuries.
Education of our staff and advancement of their skill level are vital to F4. Educational opportunities include advanced cardiac life support certification, basic critical care course, dysrhythmia course, and trauma nursing core certification. Nurses on F4 are eligible and encouraged to obtain several possible national certifications including PCCN and TCRN.
Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (F8)
F8 is a 30-bed adult inpatient unit specializing in the care and treatment of patients belonging to the Cardiology, Cardiac, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery teams. Our interprofessional teams work together to meet the needs of patients with heart and/or vascular conditions including patients recovering from amputations, aneurysm repair, angioplasty, arrhythmias, heart attack, heart failure, lung surgery, open heart surgery, pacemaker insertion, vascular surgery, and patients with valve conditions recovering from minimally invasive procedures. The unit also cares for progressive patients requiring more intensive monitoring. F8 embraces the mission and values of the UAMS Integrated Clinical Enterprise philosophy of patient care delivery.
Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (H8)
H8 is a 30-bed unit specializing in neurological and neurosurgical diagnoses. UAMS is designated as a Comprehensive Level 4 Epilepsy Center, providing the highest level of epilepsy monitoring and treatment, Comprehensive Stroke Certified Center, providing the highest level of acute stroke care, Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for spinal fusions and recognized by Healthgrades with the Cranial Neurosurgery Excellence Award. Neurosurgical services include pre and post-op care for craniotomy, deep brain stimulation (DBS), spinal decompression, and surgical EEG. Neurological services consist of care for epilepsy, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases and stroke.
Acute Hemodialysis (H7C)
H7C is a 6 station area with a separate room that can be used for isolation. Services are restricted to hemodialysis/hemoperfusion procedures. The patient population includes acute and/or chronic inpatients who require hemodialysis. Patients who are pre or post renal transplant may also receive treatments.
Patients referred from the Emergency Department (ED), may also receive dialysis treatments in the unit as well as in the ED area. Portable dialysis machines are utilized in the ED as well as other units in the hospital.
Hemodialysis treatments may also be provided on other units when the patients’ condition limits their travel to the dialysis unit. This includes but is not limited to, critical care patients, isolation patients, neutropenic patients and other patients who may be considered unstable.
The unit is open Monday thru Saturday, 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, with staff on call for emergency care 24 hours/7 days a week.
