When it came to my third delivery, I had more experience. I had worked alongside midwives and collaborated with them — not only as a labor and delivery nurse, but as a nurse practitioner. I knew they would look at things more holistically and truly listen to my goals for the delivery and the outcomes I wanted. I delivered here at UAMS with Joanie and had a wonderful experience.
Even though this was my third pregnancy and third delivery, Joanie took the time to really talk with me at each prenatal visit — to ask about my concerns, what issues I was having, and what additional support I needed, whether that was emotional or medical. She listened to me during my prenatal visits and throughout the delivery process.
My certified nurse midwife made my delivery special by incorporating my husband into the experience and helping him feel more a part of the labor and delivery process.
For any mother who is thinking about becoming pregnant or who is currently pregnant, I would strongly encourage you to reach out and talk to a midwife. They will partner with you throughout pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum care, and they can provide full-scope midwifery care through menopause and beyond. They really can be your provider for life.
