Dr. Mourani's Research
Dr. Mourani’s overall research focus has been the identification of mechanisms and biomarkers of acute lung disease in critically ill neonates, infants, and children. He has had two research foci: 1) Developmental lung and lung vascular disease in infants who are born extremely premature; and 2) Severe Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, including ventilator-associated-pneumonia in critically ill children requiring mechanical ventilator support. These two foci have capitalized on the breadth of his training as both a pulmonologist and critical care physician. His collaborations with multi-disciplinary scientific teams have yielded a consistent level of funded projects (including NIH R and U mechanisms) and produce impactful results. In addition to serving as principal investigator (PI) for funded projects in these focused areas, Dr. Mourani serves as the site PI and Steering Committee member for the prestigious NICHD supported Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN), which performs meaningful clinical research in the field of pediatric critical illness and injury. He is a key member of the team that designed the Personalized Immunomodulation in Pediatric Sepsis-induced MODS (PRECISE) for the upcoming cycle of CPCCRN, which will be among the first personalized medicine trials in pediatric critical care.
Research Interests
Dr. Mourani’s research interests are directed toward investigating mechanisms of lung and lung blood vessel growth and injury in prematurely born infants as well as mechanisms of vulnerability and resilience of children to severe lower respiratory tract infection. His research projects in this area explore prenatal and postnatal risk factors for impaired lung blood vessel growth and development of chronic lung disease, including pulmonary hypertension, in these infants. Dr. Mourani also conducts research projects utilizing molecular microbiome, transcriptomic, and proteomic analysis to diagnose lower respiratory tract infections and investigate the host-microbiome relationships that create vulnerability and resilience to these infections.UAMS Research Profile
