Clinical Biography

Dr. Patrick S. Phelan is a board-certified dermatologist and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He provides comprehensive care in adult medical and surgical dermatology, with particular expertise in complex inflammatory skin diseases. His areas of specialization include:

Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS)

Dr. Phelan serves as Director of the UAMS Hidradenitis Suppurativa Clinic, where he collaborates with a team of experienced nurses, pharmacists, and others in the care of patients with this chronic inflammatory condition affecting areas such as the underarms, groin, and under the breasts. His HS care includes:

• Advanced medical management, including biologic and other systemic therapies
• Careful medication risk counseling and monitoring to support safe, effective treatment
• Minimally invasive in-office surgical procedures to treat persistent nodules, tunnels, and scars
• Coordination of long-term, multidisciplinary care for this often challenging disease

Inpatient Consultative Dermatology

Dr. Phelan is Director of the UAMS Dermatology Consult Service, leading the care of hospitalized patients with acute or complex skin conditions. In this role, he works with medical and surgical teams throughout the hospital to diagnose and manage serious skin disease in medically ill patients.

General Medical Dermatology

Dr. Phelan manages a wide range of inflammatory, immune-related, and chronic skin conditions (see detailed list of conditions below). His approach combines well-established therapies with the newest approved medications, using evidence-based care tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.

Surgical Dermatology

Dr. Phelan performs in-office procedures including:

• Excision of skin cancers and benign growths
• Procedural treatment of select inflammatory skin conditions
• Select scar revision procedures
