About Dr. Bracey

Clinical Biography

John Bracey, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic hand and upper extremity surgeon and assistant professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). He specializes in the comprehensive care of hand, wrist, elbow, and peripheral nerve disorders and injuries in both adult and pediatric patients. His clinical expertise includes traumatic injuries of the hand, wrist, and elbow, complex peripheral nerve injuries, including brachial plexus disorders, as well as reconstructive surgery and microsurgical techniques.

As a specialist in hand and upper extremity surgery, Dr. Bracey treats a broad spectrum of conditions, including arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s disease, trigger finger, tendon injuries, fractures, nerve compression syndromes, sports injuries, and traumatic injuries of the hand and upper extremity. He is committed to providing individualized, evidence-based care using both nonsurgical treatments and advanced surgical techniques to restore function and improve quality of life.

Dr. Bracey earned his medical degree from UAMS, where he was awarded the Faculty Key, the institution’s highest honor recognizing the graduating medical student with the most outstanding academic achievement. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at UAMS, earning the Residency Leadership and Teaching Award for his dedication to education and mentorship. He then completed a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, under the direction of Dr. Glen Gaston, receiving advanced training in hand and upper extremity surgery with a special emphasis on brachial plexus and complex peripheral nerve injuries. To further expand his expertise, Dr. Bracey trained in Florianópolis, Brazil, with internationally recognized peripheral nerve surgeon Dr. Jayme Bertelli.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Bracey is an active researcher with interests in hand trauma, wrist arthritis, peripheral nerve injuries, and upper extremity reconstruction. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has presented his research at regional and national orthopaedic meetings. He is dedicated to advancing the field through research, education, and the training of future orthopaedic surgeons.

...the doctor seemed a bit harried and rushed. He was pleasant, but seemed anxious not to spend much time with me so he could move on.
