The Awards of Excellence Event is sponsored by the UAMS Medical Center Auxiliary in an effort to celebrate and honor excellence among UAMS Staff throughout the hospital. The Awards of Excellence is comprised of three prestigious awards, each of which is nominated by hospital peers.
The Helen May Compassionate Care Award
The Helen May Compassionate Care Award was established in 2003 in memory of Helen May, who died in 2001 after working at UAMS for 11 years. Nominees are recognized for delivering patient and family-centered care, guided by the service standards of safety, respect, excellence, image and efficiency.

Mary Helen Forrest Legacy in Nursing Award
The Mary Helen Forrest Legacy in Nursing Award goes to the nurse who has demonstrated a significant contribution to UAMS nursing, patient care, and the mission of UAMS. Nominees must also have worked at UAMS for at least 20 consecutive years. The recipient of this award should reflect by example specific qualities that have impacted the nursing profession to achieve a positive outcome. Team Impact Award
The UAMS Auxiliary Team Impact Award is intended to recognize outstanding service by two or more individuals, i.e. student, staff, faculty and volunteers who collectively make up a team, and is awarded to one team each year. The 2023 Award was presented to the Mortality Reduction Improvement Team.
Pictured above representatives of the Mortality Reduction Improvement Team and the Team Impact Award they received in recognition of the team successfully addressing gaps and opportunities that resulted in UAMS’ mortality index improving from 1.18 in 2018 to .82 in 2022.
Team Impact recipients must demonstrate a significant impact in areas related to the UAMS Mission, Vision, and Goals through exceptional performance, excellent service, ingenuity, and high standards of leadership as demonstrated by one or more of the following:
- Contributions to, and demonstrated commitment to, UAMS mission and core values
- Demonstrates exceptional communication and interdisciplinary collaboration to address challenges, raise standards and achieve goals
- Promotes improvement in health, safety and work environment of the UAMS community organizational innovation, cost savings, ingenuity, efficiency, and/or technological advancement.
