About the Cancer Nutrition Clinic
Nutrition is an important part of cancer treatment. Eating the right kinds of foods before, during and after treatment influences how well you feel and how you maintain your strength. At UAMS, our Cancer Nutrition Clinic can you help you ensure that you are meeting your dietary needs.
In our clinic, our expert dietitians want to support you through your battle with cancer. Before you begin treatment, you may need to change your diet to help build up your strength and withstand possible side effects of your cancer treatment.
The type of cancer, your treatment and any side effects you have must be considered when trying to determine the best way to get the nutrition your body needs. Some tumors produce chemicals that change the way the body uses certain nutrients. Your body’s use of protein, carbohydrates and fat may be affected, especially by tumors of the stomach or intestines.
If you have surgery, your body may need extra calories and protein for wound healing and recovery. And you may not be able to eat a normal diet because of surgery-related side effects.
Sometimes eating well can be difficult with certain treatments and operations, but our qualified dietitians can talk to you about any difficulty you may have getting the proper nutrients your body needs.
