A stroke can be a life-changing event, and not just for the person who is experiencing it. When it comes to preventing, treating and recovering from a stroke, put your trust in the state’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center (CSC) certified by the Joint Commission and the only one in central Arkansas ā the UAMS Health Stroke Center. The center treats adult patients with all types of strokes. This includes strokes caused by both blood clots (ischemia) and bleeding in the brain (intracranial hemorrhage).
When you are treated for a stroke at UAMS Health, you get a full team of specialists who make important contributions to your overall care. This includes healthcare providers like neurologists, vascular surgeons, neurosurgeons, cardiologists, neuroradiologists, rehabilitation specialists, and speech/swallowing specialists, among many others.
UAMS has 24/7 staffing to deliver the āclot-bustingā drug, TPA, as well as advanced clot removal techniques including Merci thrombus retrieval, and other acute intravascular procedures. As a certified Level 1 Trauma Center, we have a dedicated neurological ICU service, a vascular neurosurgeon, and a dedicated trauma neurosurgeon available at all times.
Expert Stroke Care Across the State
Through UAMSās Institute for Digital Health and Innovation (IDHI), we participate in a statewide telemedicine IDHI Stroke Program in which UAMS delivers live neurology consultations in emergency departments around Arkansas.
Stroke Research and Innovation at UAMS
UAMS Health is the first medical institution in Arkansas to join the National Institutes of Health StrokeNet, which will make new potential treatments available for patients with stroke and those at risk for stroke. NIH StrokeNet is made up of 25 regional centers across the United States and involves more than 200 hospitals in conducting small and large clinical trials and research studies to advance stroke treatment, stroke prevention, and recovery and rehabilitation following a stroke.
Current stroke research efforts at UAMS include participation in multi-center randomized clinical trials of stroke interventions.
