Throughout the United States, burn injuries account for more than 100,000 hospital admissions annually. While many burns are minor and have minimal consequences, some burns can be extensive or deep, resulting in significant scarring and functional impairment.
UAMS Health works in collaboration with Arkansas Children’s to staff and run The Burn Center at Arkansas Children’s Hospital. It is the only burn center in the state and has provided comprehensive, personal and state-of-the-art care to adult and pediatric patients since 1928. On average, the Burn Center admits over 400 inpatients and has over 2,250 outpatient visits each year.
The Burn Center is at the forefront of medicine, utilizing skin substitutes, advanced skin-grafting techniques, virtual reality and other innovative technologies to help patients recover faster, decrease pain and improve cosmetic and functional outcomes.
The Burn Team
The burn team is comprised of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, a clinical nutritionist, pharmacists, social workers, chaplains, psychologists, rehabilitation specialists and a discharge planner.
The entire team is dedicated to providing the best burn care in the nation and works with families and patients alike to assist in the rehabilitative process. The Burn Center is one of few centers across the United States that has dedicated anesthesiologists that manage patient’s pain and sedation during operative procedures and dressing changes.
