There are a variety of ear deformities, some of which are present at birth (congenital) and others that are acquired later in life. Prominent, or protruding, ears are a more common congenital ear deformity and are treated with otoplasty, or surgical shaping of the ear. Individuals who wear earrings, especially heavy ones, may have widening of their earlobe piercing hole. It may be severe enough to tear through causing a torn earlobe. This is treated with earlobe repair.
