Martha Murphy learned she carried the BRCA2 gene mutation when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. Her three daughters were tested for this gene mutation, and Lesley and Lauren found out they too carried the gene, which increases their risk of developing breast cancer in the future by four to five times that of women who do not have this gene mutation. All three have had a double mastectomy at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, with UAMS Surgeon Dr. Daniela Ochoa performing Lesley’s preventive surgery in 2017 and Lauren’s in 2020. Dr. James Yuen performed reconstructive surgery on Martha and Lauren, and Dr. Ochoa now provides follow-up care for all three members of the Murphy family.
“From the original genetic testing almost ten years ago to a recent concern related to Lesley’s pregnancy, our UAMS care team has answered all our questions and helped us make the right decisions for our growing family. We’re grateful to have expert care so close to home.” – Martha Murphy, Lesley Murphy and Lauren Murphy Eldridge, all from Little Rock
